49ers sign WR Jordan Matthews

The 49ers finally addressed their need at wide receiver, signing former Eagles and Bills wideout Jordan Matthews.

Matthews, who will turn 27 in July, has played five seasons in the NFL. He entered the league with the Eagles as a second-round pick out of Vanderbilt. He played in Philadelphia for three seasons before being traded to Buffalo for the 2017 campaign. He re-signed with the Eagles early in the 2018 season.

While his production has fallen off significantly the last two seasons, he was a very good receiver through his first three years. Matthews posted 67 catches as a rookie with 872 yards and eight touchdowns. He followed that up with 85 catches, 997 yards and eight touchdowns in his second season. His third year was less productive, with 804 yards and three touchdowns on 73 receptions.

In 2017 and 2018, Matthews had just 45 catches for 582 yards and three touchdowns combined.

Now he’ll have an opportunity to regain his early-career form in an offense where he’ll likely serve as one of the top wide receivers. His 6-foot-3, 215-pound frame makes him one of the biggest options in the 49ers’ receiving corps. He figures to compete for a spot near the top of the depth chart.
