49ers sign RB ahead of preseason opener, waive S Tyree Robinson

The 49ers added some much-needed running back depth ahead of their preseason opener with the Cowboys on Saturday. The team announced the signing of Brandon Wilds, and they waived safety Tyree Robinson in a corresponding move.

Wilds joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Falcons in 2016. He bounced from Atlanta to the Jets, to the Browns, Jaguars and Cardinals over his three NFL seasons.

He played in four games with the Jets in 2016, and three with Jacksonville last season. Wilds has 16 carries for 42 yards in his career.

He may wind up seeing touches in his first game with the 49ers since running back Jeff Wilson Jr. is out with a calf injury and Jerick McKinnon is still recovering from a torn ACL. San Francisco won’t want to put too much work on the shoulders of Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman – two players who should contribute heavily this season.

Robinson joined the 49ers last December after spending the first portion of the season with the Cowboys. Dallas signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon following the 2018 draft.

His exit may be an indicator that Jimmie Ward is nearly ready to return and soak up additional practice snaps.
