49ers sign Pro Bowl sack specialist Elvis Dumervil

Elvis Dumervil immediately becomes the 49ers' most accomplished and perhaps most feared pass rusher after signing Monday with the rebuilding franchise.

Dumervil is expected to fill the "Leo" role in the new defensive scheme being installed under coach Kyle Shanahan and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

It's been 11 years since Dumervil began his NFL career as a Denver Broncos teammate of current 49ers general manager John Lynch, who announced Monday's reunion via Twitter: "Just added another stud to harass QBs."

Dumervil, 33, has 99 career sacks through his time with the Broncos (2006-12) and Baltimore Ravens (2013-16). He got cut by the Ravens in March after totaling three sacks in an eight-game, injury-shortened 2016 season.

Dumervil, a five-time Pro Bowler, signed a two-year deal, ESPN reported. He earned All-Pro honors in 2009 and 2014 when he produced 17 sacks each year.

The 49ers are finishing up organized team activities this week and they will hold their mandatory minicamp next week before adjourning until training camp. Other than Dumervil, the 49ers top pass rushers figure to be Arik Armstead, Aaron Lynch, Ahmad Brooks, Dekoda Watson and Eli Harold.

Of course, the 49ers used their top draft pick on another potential edge rusher in Solomon Thomas, a Stanford product who's expected to join their offseason program at next week's minicamp, having been barred from participation because of Stanford's academic calendar.
