49ers sign LB, RB, waive DL Ryan Delaire

The 49ers filled out their 90-man roster Monday with two new additions. They also released defensive lineman Ryan Delaire.

San Francisco’s roster sat at 89 players before they signed running back Austin Walter out of Rice. They also signed journeyman linebacker LaRoy Reynolds, and waived Delaire to make room on the roster.

Walter is a 5-8, 200-pound undrafted free agent who posted 5.1 yards-per-carry and 13 touchdowns on 345 attempts during his four seasons at Rice. He also caught 79 balls for 803 yards and five touchdowns. 44 of those catches came in his senior season. He made a strong impression on the 49ers’ coaching staff with a good showing in his tryout at San Francisco’s rookie mini-camp.

Reynolds, 28, landed in the NFL in 2013 with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent from Virginia. He’s spent time with five teams across six NFL seasons. He’s seen most of his action on special teams with just seven starts on defense. Reynolds has 81 tackles, three tackles for loss and two quarterback hits in his limited action at linebacker.

The 49ers signed Delaire to their practice squad on Sept. 26 last season, and promoted him to the active roster the following week. He played in two games while bouncing between waivers,  the practice squad and the active roster. He was active for Week 5 and Week 17, and played just five special teams snaps in those two contests.
