49ers sign former Cardinals WR and special teams standout

The 49ers on Thursday added some special teams help and competition to their unproven receiving corps by adding former Arizona Cardinals receiver Trent Sherfield on a one-year deal.

Sherfield, 25, joined the Cardinals in 2018 as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt. He carved out a significant role on special teams and played 504 snaps there during his three seasons in Arizona.

He contributed some as a receiver too, though. NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo reported the club likes his skill set on offense as a 6-foot-1, 219-pound pass catcher. His offensive output with the Cardinals was limited to 28 receptions for 340 yards and one touchdown in 44 games.

With Kendrick Bourne headed to the Patriots, there’s a void in the 49ers’ receiving corps and no sure-fire favorite to take over. Sherfield will compete for that spot, but his ability to contribute heavily on special teams could be his path to the roster whether or not he fits in as a receiver.
