49ers sign C Dillon Day to help fill out training camp roster

The 49ers don’t expect to have starting center Weston Richburg for training camp. He was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list upon arriving at the team facility Friday. San Francisco signed center Dillon Day to help fill out the 90-man roster.

Day signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State in 2015. He spent 2015 on their practice squad, but got cut the following year.

Denver brought him back in 2017 where he spent part of the season on the practice squad before being moved to the active roster for one game that he didn’t play in. He spent time with the Colts and Packers but never made it to the active roster with either club.

He’s not liable to earn a roster spot with the 49ers, although he’ll be a practice squad candidate if he makes the most of the reps he does get in Richburg’s absence.

Veteran Ben Garland is in line to take the first-team snaps at center according to Matt Barrows of the Athletic.

The 49ers are aiming to add another tight end as well with Garrett Celek out for the preseason following offseason back surgery.
