49ers roster: No big surprises in first cuts

The 49ers on Friday announced the release of nine players from their 90-man roster in preparation for the cut down to 53 players. There weren’t any huge surprises among them, but some surprises are expected to come down at the 1:00 pm Pacific Time deadline Saturday.

Here are the nine players San Francisco waived Friday:

DL Jay Bromley
CB Chris Campbell
DB Jordan Holland
CB Dontae Johnson
OL Wesley Johnson
TE Tyree Mayfield
CB Quinten Rollins
RB Brandon Wilds
OT Sam Young

Young, 32, is the only semi-surprise in this group. He was signed late in the offseason and looked to be the frontrunner for the swing tackle job. His performance in the preseason was subpar though, and he couldn’t nail down a role on the 53-man roster.

Several players could make their way back to San Francisco’s practice squad if they clear waivers. Mayfield and Bromley both had strong preseasons and could be contributors down the road if they do return as part of the 10-man practice squad.
