49ers re-sign RB Jeff Wilson Jr. to 1-year deal

Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. was a bright spot for the 49ers in an otherwise dismal 2020 campaign. San Francisco on Tuesday announced Wilson, who was set to be a restricted free agent, will return to the club next season on a one-year deal.

Wilson began his career as an undrafted rookie with the 49ers in 2018. Injuries during his first season pushed him from the practice squad to the active roster, and his hard-nosed running style earned him a couple starts in the six games he played.

His role in 2019 became more limited after Tevin Coleman signed and Raheem Mostert emerged as the team’s top running back, but Wilson still saw some success as a short-yardage back in 10 games.

Last season he broke out in his second chance at being a lead back. Wilson last season led the 49ers in rushing yards with 600, rushing touchdowns with seven, and total touchdowns with 10. He started three of his 12 games and posted career-highs across the board.

By signing Wilson to a deal now, San Francisco avoids a team making an offer they’d be forced to match to retain the running back in restricted free agency.

With Jerick McKinnon likely on his way out and Coleman due to hit the free agent market, Wilson looks to be in line for a substantial role next season alongside Raheem Mostert in the 49ers backfield.
