49ers place rookie CB Tim Harris Jr. on IR, sign another CB

The 49ers announced Monday that rookie cornerback Tim Harris is headed to injured reserve. They added defensive back Jordan Holland to replace him on the 90-man roster.

Harris was a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft and dealt with injuries throughout his college career. With not many snaps available for corners on the back end of the roster, San Francisco can effectively redshirt Harris for his rookie season to ensure he’s healthy long term.

The Virginia product has NFL size and made a couple nice plays in limited preseason action. He’ll have a legitimate chance to land on the roster next season as long as he has his health intact.

Holland is the son of 49ers outside linebackers coach and run game specialist Johnny Holland. The younger Holland played his college football at Prairie View A&M. He went undrafted in 2016 and played in two professional indoor leagues, the Canadian Football League and the Alliance of American Football before making his way to San Francisco.

The 49ers close their preseason Thursday at home against the Chargers. Final roster cuts have to be made by August 31 at 1:00 PM Pacific Time.
