For the second time this season the 49ers have placed running back Elijah Mitchell on Injured Reserve.
Mitchell in the 49ers Week 13 win over the Saints suffered his second MCL sprain of the season. He sustained one in the season opener against the Bears and missed seven games. This time he sprained the other knee and will likely miss the rest of the regular season.
This IR stint wasn’t assured since the 49ers are up against their maximum of eight return designations. They’ve already used six, and they’re planning to bring back defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw, which would make seven. Mitchell would be the eighth if he’s able to make it back for the postseason.
Interestingly, Mitchell going to IR was the 49ers’ only roster move Saturday. They chose not to elevate anyone from the practice squad, though it would’ve made sense if they brought up RB Tevin Coleman. Instead they’ll roll into Sunday with Christian McCaffrey, Tyrion Davis-Price and Jordan Mason as their three tailbacks. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk and wide receiver Deebo Samuel could also fill in some of the carries.
