49ers open space on 90-man roster, waive DB Alex Brown

The 49ers on Thursday cleared a spot on their 90-man roster by waiving first-year defensive back Alex Brown.

Brown signed with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent in May after playing for five years at South Carolina State. He played in 31 college games with 25 starts. He posted seven interceptions, 26 pass breakups and 90 tackles in those contests.

It was a long shot that Brown was going to make the roster as an undrafted free agent, but the cornerback depth chart is wide open so the door is cracked a little more than normal at that spot.

His release is an indication that the 49ers feel good about the competition they have at that position. It could also mean they have their eye on another player they want to bring in.

San Francisco is doing some final roster tweaking before they open training camp Friday. They also added defensive end Damontre Moore on Wednesday.
