49ers officially sign rookie P Mitch Wishnowsky

It didn’t take long for the 49ers to iron out contract details with fourth-round pick Mitch Wishnowsky. The team announced Tuesday that the punter signed his four-year contract. He’s the first 2019 draft pick to sign.

A four-year contract is standard for draft picks. First-round picks are given a fifth-year team option. Typically contract holdups for rookies have to do with specific language within the deal.

Wishnowsky was considered by some the best punter in the draft. San Francisco scooped him up with the No. 110 overall pick. He’s now the lone punter on the roster after Justin Vogel was waived Monday.

The Australian-born punter spent one year at Santa Barbara City College before spending his final three college seasons at the University of Utah. Wishnowsky, 27, averaged 45.7 yards-per-punt on 175 kicks in his three years at Utah. He was a Ray Guy Award winner as the nation’s best punter in 2016, and a finalist for the award in each of his final two seasons.

With Vogel no longer on the team, Wishnowsky has a free path to the starting job in training camp.
