49ers injury report: Deebo Samuel misses practice with illness

The 49ers’ Thursday practice report featured a surprise name with wide receiver Deebo Samuel listed as a non-participant. Initial worry about a possible setback with his previously-injured foot was quelled when he was on the injury report with an illness.

He was not placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list so that can be ruled out as his illness.

Samuel on Sunday made his return from a foot injury and played 25 snaps. He followed that with a full practice Wednesday, so alarm bells went off when media at the team facility didn’t notice him in the portion of practice open to media. Samuel initially went on Injured Reserve before Week 1 when foot soreness after a workout got worse and sidelined him for three weeks.

Another couple changes on the participation report came in the secondary. Jimmie Ward missed Wednesday’s session with a wrist injury, but was a full participant Thursday. Ahkello Witherspoon missed Wednesday and was limited Thursday.

Here’s Thursday’s full participation report:

Did not participate

DE Ezekiel Ansah (biceps)
CB Dontae Johnson (groin)
CB Emmanuel Moseley (concussion)
WR Deebo Samuel (illness)
CB K’Waun Williams (knee, hip)

Limited participation

QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle)
LB Dre Greenlaw (quadricep)
RB Raheem Mostert (knee)
CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring)

Full participation

WR Dante Pettis (knee)
WR Trent Taylor (ankle)
S Jimmie Ward (wrist)
