49ers injury report: 49ers starting safeties miss another practice

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday was some hope that starting safeties Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward could return for the team’s Week 8 contest in Seattle. The first practice of the week on Wednesday didn’t buoy any optimism. Both players were among seven non-participants in the session.

Tartt is still working through a groin injury he suffered in a Week 6 victory over the Rams. Ward strained his quad in Thursday’s practice leading up to the Patriots game. He missed the contest because of the injury.

The good news for San Francisco is that backup free safety Tarvarius Moore and backup strong safety Marcell Harris both played well and provided some confidence that they can perform against a high-octane Seahawks attack.

The 49ers also had three players open practice windows after stints on Injured Reserve. Tevin Coleman, Jordan Reed and K’Waun Williams all had their three-week practice periods opened, but since they haven’t been activated yet, they’re not required to go on the practice report.

Here’s the full participation report for Wednesday:

Did not participate

LB Kwon Alexander (ankle)
WR Richie James (ankle)
WR Deebo Samuel (hamstring)
S Jaquiski Tartt (groin)
CB Jason Verrett (not injury related)
S Jimmie Ward (quadricep)
RB Jeffery Wilson (ankle)
