After dismantling the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers are back in the Super Bowl for the first time since 2012. The Niners are 5-1 in the big game and can match the Steelers and Patriots for a record-tying sixth Super Bowl title, so let’s go down mostly Montana memory lane to look at their SB results.
Super Bowl XVI (1982)

How old-school was this SB? Well, it was played at the Silverdome in Detroit, Diana Ross sang the national anthem and the halftime show was themed: Up with People presents “Salute to the 1960s and Motown”.
Awesome.
Joe Montana, who led the Niners to a 26-21 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, was named MVP even though he threw for only 157 yards and one touchdown.
Super Bowl XIX (1985)

Montana was once again named MVP (331 yards passing including three touchdowns), after outplaying Dan Marino (who also threw for over 300 yards) and the Dolphins en route to a 38-16 victory.
Super Bowl XXIII (1988)

The Niners’ win will be remembered by most from this pass from Montana to John Taylor.
But Jerry Rice was named MVP in San Francisco’s 20-16 victory over the hangdog Bengals.
Super Bowl XXIV (1989)

This one was fun laugher if you’re a 49ers fan and a recurring nightmare if you’re a Broncos fan. It was ugly and over early. The final was 55-10. Montana was 22 of 29 for 297 yards and five touchdowns and later won his third MVP trophy.
Super Bowl XXIX (1994)

Oh, to be Young again. Steve Young. At least on this glorious Sunday for the Niners QB who finally got a chance to escape Joe Montana’s shadow on the game’s biggest stage. And boy did he deliver, passing for 325 yards and a record six touchdowns in the Niners’ 49-26 blasting of the Chargers.
Super Bowl XLVII (2012)

The only blemish on the 49ers’ Super Bowl resume. In the Battle of Coaching Brothers (the Harbaughs), John’s Ravens outlasted Jim’s 49ers 34-31. Joe Flacco was MVP. It’s a game that will be remembered not just as the Niners’ only Super Bowl loss, but also for the half-hour power outage at the Superdome early in the third quarter. The blackout sure seemed to help the 49ers stop the Ravens momentum as they rallied to within five and the Niners had a chance to go ahead late in the fourth quarter but Baltimore stopped San Francisco on 4th-and-goal.
