49ers have no players on reserve/COVID-19 list after flurry of roster moves

The 49ers on Tuesday made a few roster moves official that general manager John Lynch intimated would be coming in his season-opening press conference.

San Francisco took both Richie James Jr. and Jeff Wilson Jr. off the reserve/COVID-19 list. James will head to the active/Non-Football Injury list while he deals with a broken hand he suffered in the offseason. Wilson goes back to the active roster.

While the 49ers try to keep their training camp roster at 80 to accommodate health and safety protocols, they made a pair of corresponding moves to free up roster spots. San Francisco waived safety Chris Edwards, and waived/Non-Football Injury defensive back DJ Reed.

Edwards was signed from the Canadian Football League in January. Lynch said Reed’s season is likely done while he deals with a torn pectoral he suffered in the offseason. If Reed clears waivers he’ll revert to the 49ers’ reserve/Non-Football Injury list.

The 49ers also officially moved wide receiver Shawn Poindexter and defensive lineman Kentavius Street off the active/Physically Unable to Perform list. Lynch said they’d be coming off the list soon and able to practice once the team takes the field. They both had season-ending injuries last year. There won’t be any corresponding moves since they were on the active/PUP list and were already counting toward the 80-man roster.
