49ers fear torn ACL for rookie WR Shawn Poindexter, re-sign Chris Thompson

49ers rookie Shawn Poindexter went down with a knee injury in the second half of Monday night’s game against Denver. He was officially listed as questionable to return, but now the team fears he tore his ACL. In anticipation of that, they’re planning to re-sign wide receiver Chris Thompson per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Poindexter went down while covering a punt and limped off the field with help. He was eventually carted off.

The undrafted rookie from Arizona wasn’t likely to make the 53-man roster. However, his size and athleticism made him an ideal practice squad candidate for a team in need of a big-play receiver. A torn ACL would likely mean his 2019 season is over.

Thompson originally signed with San Francisco in early August, but only lasted five days with the club. He entered the league with Houston in 2017, and also spent time with the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football prior to the league folding.
