49ers continue adding depth on offensive line

The 49ers made their second offensive line addition of the week Tuesday when they signed veteran center Wesley Johnson. They released tight end Marcus Lucas in a corresponding move.

Johnson was a fifth-round pick of the Steelers in 2014 out of Vanderbilt. He played tackle in college, but moved to center in the NFL. He has 24 starts across five seasons. Johnson was waived during his rookie year and scooped up by the Jets. He spent the next three seasons there before signing with the Dolphins last season.

Weston Richburg is the only center on the 49ers’ roster, so adding another body at that spot makes sense for San Francisco heading into training camp.

Lucas was released in order to keep the 49ers’ roster at 90 players. He joined San Francisco’s practice squad late last season. He’s bounced around to several teams after signing with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2014.
