The Chargers put 14 points on the board in the second quarter, but the 49ers responded with a touchdown of their own. Los Angeles leads 20-14 going into the second half.
Here’s what stood out in the second quarter:
Good and bad from Greenlaw
There was a positive from the rookie and a negative on back-to-back plays. On the Chargers’ first drive of the second quarter, Greenlaw was able to get to Cardale Jones for the team’s first sack of the night. On the next play, Jones threw it to Detrez Newsome where Greenlaw had a chance to make a stop, but flew past the running back to allow Newsome to pick up another 15 yards.
Damontre Moore
The 49ers defense allowed a 12-play, 74-yard touchdown drive late in the second quarter to give the Chargers a 20-7 lead. Moore did his best to prevent the touchdown with Los Angeles down at the 2-yard line. The 26-year-old stopped Jeremy Cox at the 1-yard line then got to Jones for a loss of 1 on the next play before Jones found the end zone on third down.
It’s expected that the 49ers will keep at least 10 defensive lineman, and Moore is at the tail end of the list. His four tackles at the half could play a deciding factor come Saturday.
Two-minute drill touchdown
After a touchdown that gave Los Angeles a 20-7 lead, the 49ers took over with 2:43 remaining in the half at their own 25-yard line. CJ Beathard went 3-for-4 for 35 yards with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne to close the drive. The drive was aided by a pass interference that gave the 49ers 27 yards.
