49ers cornerback K’Waun Williams isn’t expected to return any time soon while he deals with a high ankle sprain. The NFL on Tuesday ensured he won’t be back for at least two weeks though when the league announced Williams is suspended for two games for violating its performance-enhancing substance policy.
Per the NFL’s 2020 policy on performance-enhancing substances, players who get their first positive test result for a stimulant, diuretic or masking agent receive a two-game suspension. That’s four games fewer than required six games for a positive result for an anabolic substance.
Williams was hurt in the 49ers’ Week 9 loss to the Packers. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated he could miss the rest of the season, and the only reason he wasn’t put on Injured Reserve is because he’d already used the short-term designation. He went on IR for three games earlier in the season with a knee injury. A second IR stint would’ve automatically been season-ending.
It was unlikely Williams was going to return for either of the next two games, although now he won’t even be able to practice until after the 49ers’ Week 13 contest vs. the Bills.
Williams this season has 14 tackles, 1.0 sacks and 2 pass breakups in six games.
