49ers boost cornerback depth by bringing back two familiar faces

Jason Verrett, who only had a brief but disastrous appearance with the 49ers during an injury plagued 2019 season, is coming back to the team along with fellow cornerback Dontae Johnson.

The 49ers beefed up their cornerback depth by announcing Monday they've signed one-year deals with both of the team's own unrestricted free agents.

The 28-year-old Verrett spent most of last season on injured reserve after making his 49ers debut in Week 3 against the Steelers. After being sidelined during training camp with an ankle injury, Verrett struggled badly during his 14 snaps of action against the Steelers. He played just four snaps on defense _ he was flagged for pass interference on a deep throw and then permitted a touchdown catch.

Verrett was placed on season-ending injured reserve the next week. The 2014 first-round pick of the Chargers has played in just four games the past four seasons because of knee and Achilles injuries.

The 49ers are hoping for bounce-back seasons for both Verrett and Johnson, a 27-year-old former fourth-round pick in 2014 who was once one of their starting cornerbacks.

Johnson was signed to replace Verrett last season and appeared in seven games after initially being one of the 49ers' final cuts before the season. Johnson, who has played for five other teams since 2018, had three solo tackles for San Francisco last year.
