49ers are waiving QB Josh Rosen

The Josh Rosen era is over in San Francisco. ESPN’s Mike Garafolo on Tuesday reported the 49ers are waiving the former No. 10 overall pick. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area confirmed the report.

Rosen originally joined the 49ers late last season when they snagged him off the Buccaneers practice squad. He re-signed this offseason with a chance to work his way onto the roster as the third quarterback.

He wasn’t having a good camp and drew open criticism from head coach Kyle Shanahan. Rosen got virtually the entire second half of the 49ers’ preseason opener and didn’t put together a particularly inspiring effort. He completed 10 of his 15 throws for 93 yards and an interception. The interception was a particularly bad play where he overthrew his receiver and hit Chiefs defensive back Armani Watts in the chest.

This leaves the 49ers with three quarterbacks on the roster, including Jimmy Garoppolo, and Nate Sudfeld who was in a battle with Rosen for the third spot on the roster. San Francisco may wind up only keeping two signal callers, but the odds Rosen was going to eclipse Sudfeld were growing more slim by the day.

The 49ers now have 84 players on their roster, one below the new 85-man threshold. Keep track of all their cuts here:
