49ers announce QB Jimmy Garoppolo will start Sunday against Dolphins

Kyle Shanahan confirmed Friday afternoon that Jimmy Garoppolo will be back as the 49ers' starting quarterback on Sunday.

The 49ers coach said he's seen enough of Garoppolo during practice the past three days to feel comfortable his recovery from an ankle injury will allow him to play against the Dolphins.

Shanahan also announced C.J. Beathard is now the backup quarterback, having beaten out Nick Mullens for the No. 2 spot after Sunday's loss to the Eagles.

Garoppolo had missed the last 2 { games with a right high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 2 against the Jets.

Garoppolo may not have the services of top wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who missed practice again Friday with an illness. Shanahan said although they don't believe Samuel's illness is COVID related, but because the 24-year-old exhibited a couple of the symptoms (fever, aches) he has to automatically sit out two practices. Samuel already had one negative test and he's taking a second.
