49ers address secondary in way-too-early 2020 mock draft

The 49ers may or may not have glaring holes in their secondary following the 2019 season. They may have them now, but the front office opted to let their current crop of talent compete for starting jobs to see how they fare with a better pass rush. It stands to reason that not every player will rise to the occasion, and they’ll enter the 2020 draft needing defensive back help.

Plenty has to happen in the next year before the draft, but ESPN’s Todd McShay posted an early look at the 2020 draft.  San Francisco picks 11th in his mock, and chooses Florida cornerback CJ Henderson.

McShay noted Henderson’s six interceptions through two seasons with the Gators, but it’s logical that he wouldn’t have a deep knowledge of the 2020 defensive back class yet. He has good size at 6-1, 191 pounds, so he’ll be a prospect worth keeping an eye on in the 2020 college football season.

Perhaps the most interesting note in this mock is that Football Outsiders has the 49ers picking just outside the top 10 next year. Cincinnati held the No. 11 pick this year with a 6-10 record.

Another season well below .500 could certainly mean the experiment in the secondary didn’t work out, but there could be larger problems that San Francisco has to address with that selection. For now though, a lengthy cornerback with good ball skills sounds like a nice fit for the 2020 iteration of the 49ers.
