49ers add TE and OL, release 2 others

The 49ers on Saturday continued tweaking their training camp roster with the season opener just two weeks away. San Francisco announced the additions of offensive lineman Dakoda Shepley and tight end MarQueis Gray. They released offensive lineman Kofi Amichia and TE Erik Swoope in a corresponding move.

Shepley and Gray were both part of a Friday workout that involved five players. Shepley was a standout rookie in the Canadian Football League last season after the Saskatchewan Roughriders made him the No. 5 overall pick in the CFL draft. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie with the Jets in 2018.

Gray made his entry into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers in 2013 out of the University of Minnesota. He was cut by the 49ers, but landed with the Browns and played 12 games his rookie year. Gray also spent time with the Vikings, Bills and Dolphins, and hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2017 season.

Neither of the new signees are liable to make the roster, but they could be practice squad players who add additional roster depth for San Francisco. They’re pretty thin on the offensive line and at tight end. Gray adds some much-needed experience at the position while Shepley comes with upside that could develop beyond the 2020 season.
