49ers add DE, waive recently-signed WR

Chris Thompson’s time with the 49ers lasted less than a week. The wide receiver was waived Thursday in order to make room for defensive lineman Jeremiah Valoaga.

Valoaga gives the 49ers another body at defensive end while they deal with a slew of injuries at that position. The 6-6, 275-pound defensive lineman got to the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Lions in 2017. He appeared in nine games as a rookie and notched five tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.

The 24-year-old was eventually waived by Detroit and signed by the Dolphins in January. Miami waived him in May and he remained without a job until the 49ers signed him.

Thompson, a 25-year-old former Texans receiver, signed with the 49ers August 3. He was at the back of a deep receiving corps that’s still battling for roster spots.

San Francisco opens their preseason schedule Saturday against the Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium.
