The 49ers on Wednesday announced some significant movement on their roster. They signed offensive lineman Andrew Lauderdale, safety Tyree Robinson and wide receiver Chris Thompson. To make room on the roster, they waived offensive lineman Christian DiLauro, running back Brandon Wilds, and waive/injured wide receiver Shawn Poindexter.
Poindexter hurt his knee in Monday’s preseason game in Denver, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday the team feared it was an ACL injury and that they expected to re-sign Thompson. Thompson spent five days with the club early in August.
Lauderdale originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2017, then spent time on their practice squad before bouncing around to the Bills, Cardinals and Jaguars.
San Francisco’s reserve offensive line has struggled in the preseason. DiLauro only played eight snaps Monday night after joining the team last September after the Browns cut him early in the month.
Robinson is a familiar face who spent part of last season on the practice squad, then was cut by San Francisco early in August. Now he’s reinserted into the secondary with a chance to land a spot on the practice squad.
Wilds signed with San Francisco hours ahead of their preseason opener, and had a nice game against Dallas. His snaps were limited once Jeff Wilson Jr. returned from a calf injury though, and his one offensive rep against Denver was a sign his time in the Bay Area was coming to an end.
The 49ers must have their 90-man roster down to 53 by September 1.
