49 more coronavirus deaths in the North East as England total rises by 828

A further 49 people have died in the North East after contracting coronavirus.

A total of 828 deaths were reported by NHS England on Wednesday afternoon, taking the total number of Covid-19 related fatalities in the country to 6,483.

A spokesperson for NHS England said: "Patients were aged between 22 and 103 years old. 46 of the 828 patients (aged between 35 and 96 years old) had no known underlying health condition.

"Their families have been informed."

In the North East, Gateshead recorded the highest number of fatalities with 15 while there were 10 more in South Tees hospitals.

Across the rest of the UK, 33 more people have died after testing positive for the virus in Wales, while there have been five further deaths in Northern Ireland and 70 in Scotland.

The new figures come as Downing Street confirmed that Boris Johnson was still in intensive care after being admitted to hospital.
