49 fined for littering at UT, Kalka railway stations in Sept

CHANDIGARH: Ambala Division of Northern Railways has apprehended 49 persons littering at platforms and inside train coaches at Chandigarh and Kalka railway stations in just 30 days. In the month of September, the railways earned a fine of Rs10,650 as littering challans under the Anti-Littering Act, said Ambala divisional railway manager (DRM) Gurinder Mohan Singh.

He said, “A pecial emphasis has been laid to curb the menace of littering among the general public to make railway stations and train coaches clean. For this purpose, regular checks are conducted at the main stations of the division as a result of which 285 passengers were apprehended under the Anti-Littering Act and Rs. 57,250 has been recovered from them.

Out of this, Rs 4,950 and Rs 5,700 fine has been collected from Chandigarh and Kalka railway stations, respectively, in just 30 days.”

The DRM further said overall, the Ambala division had earned Rs 3.59 crore through penalty on unauthorized travel from 66,711 passengers in the month of September, including ticketless passengers.

He added that the ticketchecking earning segment included charges collected from conversion of a ticket to higher class and extension of journey tickets by travelling ticket examiners (TTEs) manning reserved coaches. To ensure Covid-19 norms,129 cases without masks were also realized.
