A man has been arrested and charged with murder just over 24 hours after a woman’s body was discovered in Sydney’s west.
ICYMI, police began their investigation in the suburb of Werrington on Monday, after the body of a woman — now identified as 47-year-old Leanne Akrap — was found in a reserve on Sunday.
In the early hours of this morning, 47-year-old Bryan Steven Johnson was charged with Akrap’s murder, following his arrest by detectives at a home in Hobartville at around 6pm on Monday.
Per 9News, Johnson was taken to Windsor Police Station, where he was refused bail ahead of an appearance before Penrith Local Court today.

The publication reports that police will allege Johnson was known to Akrap, but that the pair were not in a domestic relationship.
It comes days after a passerby discovered Akrap’s body, located off Irwin Street, and alerted authorities on Sunday afternoon. Police said the body had been there for several days before it was discovered.
Under Strike Force Dowerin, police launched two crime scenes in connection to the alleged murder, including one half a kilometre from the reserve where Akrap was found.
Later, police were seen door-knocking around nearby properties.
It’s reported that Akrap was found partially clothed and lying face down next to rubbish and clothes in the bushland, an area which Detective Superintendent Trent King said was “quite isolated” (per The Sydney Morning Herald).

“It seems like the body had been there for a period of time without discovery,” King said.
According to police, the reserve where Akrap was found backs on to residential areas on one side and a sporting field on the other.
A report is currently being prepared for the coroner.
“We’re hoping, certainly in the next couple of days, through both the post-mortem examination as well as the examination today, that we will have further information,” King said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, neighbour Bridget Cooper said she’s “never seen anything like it”, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
“It’s pretty daunting to think something’s happened that close.”
Investigations are ongoing.
