A total of 44 schools in the North East are set to benefit from part of a government £560m improvement fund for out-of-date school buildings.
The Department for Education on Wednesday confirmed how the funding would be allocated to hundreds of schools across the country.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said: "As we work towards all children returning to school in September, this investment in our school and college buildings helps create modern environments that lend themselves to great teaching, making sure every child has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
"We have worked at great speed to release this additional £560 million of condition funding to schools for projects this year to kick-start the economy and transform the buildings so vital for excellent teaching.
"We have now allocated over £2 billion this year to improve the condition of our school buildings, paving the way for our new transformative ten-year school building programme starting later this year with over £1 billion funding for the first wave of 50 schools."
In Newcastle, 13 projects across 11 schools received a boost.
Coun Paula Holland, cabinet member for education and skills at Newcastle City Council, said: “I am delighted that a number of Newcastle schools are among those to have been successful in applying for this national funding.
“This investment will help to bring about improvements to those school buildings, which will benefit both staff and pupils by providing a more secure and comfortable learning environment.”
Among the Newcastle schools to benefit are seven out of the eight primary schools run by the Smart academy trust in the city, who will have projects including improved gates and security and new classrooms at schools including Kenton Bar Primary School and Farne Primary school.
Colin Lofthouse, CEO of Smart Multi-academy Trust, added: "‘We are absolutely delighted with the announcement of more funding for our schools today.
"We have been very successful winning 9 out of 13 bids awarded to schools in Newcastle. This will ensure our schools are safe, secure and up to date for all of our pupils and families who we are proud to serve in our schools."

One large lump sum has been allocated to St Wilfrid’s RC College, in South Shields, where £1.5m has been allocated to allow the school to build an extension incorporating six additional classrooms and a larger dining space.
Brendan Tapping, CEO at Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, which runs the school, said: “The improvements to our building will greatly enhance the experience of our students, not least because we will be able to build the new facilities to the most modern standards.
“With our plans coming together to enable all children to return to school in September, it’s great to be able to look to the future and know we will have the space and facilities we need to give all our children the education they deserve.”
Another school set to benefit is St Aidan’s Catholic Academy, in Sunderland, which is due to receive more than £900,000 for fire safety improvements and window replacements.
