44 more North East coronavirus deaths as England total rises to more than 8,000

Forty-four more people have died in the North East after contracting coronavirus.

A total of 866 deaths were reported by NHS England on Friday afternoon, taking the total number of Covid-19 related fatalities in the country to 8,114.

A spokesperson for NHS England said that of the 866 new deaths announced today, 117 occurred on April 9 while 720 took place between April 1 and April 8.

The remaining 29 deaths occurred in March, including one on March 5.

Five NHS trusts have now reported more than 200 deaths to date since the outbreak began.

In the North East, there were 12 deaths reported by the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, the highest in the region once again, while there were 10 reported in Gateshead.

The latest figures from NHS England come after Dominic Raab said it was too early to review the current lockdown measures at the latest Downing Street briefing.

Boris Johnson is still receiving care for the disease at St Thomas' Hospital in London after moving out of intensive care on Thursday night.
