400-tonnes of clothing goes up in flames after large fire breaks out at Cowbridge industrial estate

Fire crews worked through the night after a large fie broke out at a Cowbridge industrial estate.

Emergency services were called to reports of 400-tonnes of clothing, which was ready to be recycled, going up in flames.

On Monday morning, the fire was still ongoing and crews were at the scene near to the Forest Products timber yard in Crossways.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have set up an incident control van and a Welsh Water tanker is at the sceen.

The alarm was raised at 11.15pm on Sunday and at the height of the fire there were nine engines and 38 firefighters working to put it out.

Richard Belby, the manager of Forest Products, said luckily the fire hadn't affected his busines.

He said: “I had friends ringing me this morning asking me if I was alright. Obviously being a timber yard everyone was worried it might have gone up in smoke.

"I came from Barry this morning and you could see the smoke driving up.

"Fortunately it hasn’t come too near to the building and they have contained it."

A spokesman for the fire service said crews worked quickly in "challenging conditions" to ensure the fire did not spread to nearby buildings.

Officers worked through the night and are still at the scene on Monday morning.

Local residents have been advised to keep doors and windows shut due to the amount of smoke.

South Wales Police said: "Please could local residents keep their doors and windows closed due to the amount of smoke in the area. Thank you for your assistance."
