WYEE has finally been connected to sewer after a $36 million project was formally commissioned on Friday.
Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper, NSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey and Hunter Water's Darren Cleary joined residents in the suburb on Friday for the milestone.
The connection means more than 400 residential properties can now apply to connect to the system, which also has capacity for about 2750 new properties.
Hunter Water has encouraged residents to get three quotes from licenced plumbers before choosing and applying to the utility.
"Celebrating the arrival of a sewer network might seem a bit odd to some people, but after decades of campaigning by the community to get this project across the line, I know how much it means to the people of Wyee," Mr Piper said.
"With major new housing developments coming on line in the area, an upgraded rail station with lifts completed, a recently upgraded fire station and an expanded shopping village under construction, Wyee is a town on the move and I'm very happy to see it reaching its potential.
The project's initial funding dates back to former NSW Premier Mike Baird, Mr Piper said, and the COVID-19 pandemic had caused delays in fitting the older village to modern amenities "taken for granted" in most parts of the state.
