MORE than 400 artists and labels have backed a campaign to pull their music from streaming platforms in Israel over the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Massive Attack, Kneecap and Primal Scream are among the hundreds of artists who have joined the “No Music For Genocide” campaign, which sees musicians' music geo-blocked and removed from being accessed in Israel.
The coalition is urging major groups like Sony, UMG, and Warner to back the boycott, as those behind the campaign highlighted that the labels blocked their entire catalogs one month into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Launching the campaign, a statement from the No Music For Genocide organisers said: “Culture can’t stop bombs on its own, but it can help reject political repression, shift public opinion toward justice, and refuse the art-washing and normalization of any company or nation that commits crimes against humanity.
“This initiative is one part of a worldwide movement to erode the support Israel needs to continue its genocide.”
On Friday, the Irish-rap trio Kneecap announced they had joined the campaign as they posted a statement on Instagram confirming they had made a formal request to their label to remove their music from streaming platforms in Israel.
Meanwhile, Massive Attack confirmed their participation in the campaign and spoke on the experience of the successful cultural boycott against apartheid South Africa during the 90s.
In a statement on Instagram on Thursday, the band wrote: “We'd appeal to all musicians to transfer their sadness, anger and artistic contributions into a coherent, reasonable & vital action to end the unspeakable hell being visited upon the Palestinians hour after hour.”
The campaign comes after an inquiry by the United Nations (UN) found that Israel has committed genocide in Palestine.
In the report Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, president Isaac Herzog and former defence minister Yoav Gallant were all named as inciting acts of genocide.
Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have killed almost 65,000 Palestinians and destroyed most of the territory’s healthcare infrastructure. The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OCHR) found that at least 46% of those killed since then were women and children.
