40 per cent of A Level 'results' in England revised - mostly downwards

97% of A-level students in England will be getting within one grade of what their teacher predicted, the Education Secretary said today.

And Gavin Williamson said top level A and A* grades will increase by two per cent.

Mr Williamson said 40% of all grades have been "revised" - most of them down, reports The Mirror.

He said an appeals procedure will be revealed on Monday - after yesterday saying students can use a 'valid' mock exam result instead of their actual grade.

Sky News said in one school, 301 out of 646 predicted grades were downgraded through a "standardisation" system after all exams were cancelled due to coronavirus.

Mr Williamson said: "97% of youngsters who will be receiving their grades will be getting either the grade the school actually gave, or within one grade of what that school gave," he told Sky.

The Education Secretary added the number of As and A*s will increase by 2% this year over last year.

He told Sky News: "We've got to make sure there's proper checks and balances within the system.

"If we do not have checks and balances within the system you'll have even greater unfairness - where potentially some people would take advantage of the fact that there aren't checks and balances.

"But there are going to be some students who are in a situation where they receive a grade that isn't reflective of their work and of their efforts over the last few years.

"And that's why it's been so important to put in place the triple lock, make sure there's systems in place so that they can have those grades very quickly and very rapidly looked at.

"And if those grades need to be changed, if they've got a valid mock exam, that can form the basis in actually getting that grade.

"There's a whole series of routes of appeal that schools can take forward".
