40 baby names set to go extinct this year, and it isn't good news for Kate

A site that has been tracking baby names for the last 18 years has identified which 40 are most at risk of going extinct this year having dropped out of favour in recent months. It means few parents will be picking boys names like Kyle, Walter and Hugo in 2023 - which is ideal if you are looking for something unique, or could mean your baby stands out in the years ahead.

For girls both Kate and Katherine have fallen out of favour, despite it being the name of the new Princess of Wales.

A spokesman for BabyCenter said: "In general, it seems like boy names starting with the letter “K” are falling out of favor. Khalid, Kian, Kyle, and Kobe were all among those that fell significantly (between 138 and 60 spots) in the rankings from 2021 to 2022.

"For girls, Hayden was the name that fell the most, by a whopping 202 spots in the rankings. And in unfortunate news, the name Joy was also one of the hardest hit, falling 112 places."
