BURI RAM: A 60-year-old woman and her young grandson herding the family's buffaloes found an abandoned suitcase containing about 40,000 methamphetamine pills on their way home on Sunday evening, police said.
Thawee Singwong, of Ban Song Phi Nong in Nang Rong district, said her 4-year-old grandson, Mos, spotted the pink suitcase. He was fascinated by the bright colour and asked if they could take it home.
She told him to bring it along, assuming it was empty and without taking a look inside. Once home, the family gathered round as they opened it and were surprised to find it contained 10 firmly taped packages.
They quickly called police.
Police said the suitcase was left at the foot of a road sign near the 5th kilometre marker on Nang Rong-Pakham road. It was possibly a drop-off point used by drug traffickers, or maybe the drugs had been deliberately abandoned to avoid arrest.
Each package was likely to contain 4,000 pills, bringing the total to 40,000 pills, police said.
The investigation was continuing.
