4-year-old girl recovering after near-drowning in Warrenville pool

June 09--A 4-year-old girl found unresponsive at the bottom of a Warrenville fitness center pool last week is recovering and doing well, first responders said Monday.

"She's able to answer questions, recall family members and pets," said Warrenville Fire Protection District Chief Dennis Rogers, who said he received an update Monday morning. "I'm just happy there's a happy ending."

Rogers said the girl, who has not been named, was not breathing when firefighters responded to a call of a drowning victim at Lifetime Fitness on the 28000 block of Diehl Road in Warrenville. The call came about 2:10 p.m. June 4.

Warrenville police were first on the scene, Rogers said. When firefighters arrived, they immediately began trying to resuscitate the girl, through CPR and suctioning the water from her airway, he said. She was taken by ambulance to Edward Hospital in Naperville.

The near-drowning happened in Lifetime Fitness' outdoor pool during open swim and while lifeguards were on duty, Rogers said.

"I don't know what happened on their end," Rogers said.

Natalie Bushaw, spokeswoman for Lifetime Fitness, said in an email that the fitness center is conducting its own investigation.

"Above all, our thoughts and prayers are with the child and family at this time," Bushaw said.

The town where the girl resides has not been released. Warrenville police said the event is under investigation.
