Sept. 01--One man is dead and eight others were wounded in shootings in Chicago since Thursday, according to police.
The most recent shooting occurred around 4:25 a.m. Friday in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side when a 30-year-old man was seriously wounded, according to Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.
The man was in the 2800 block of West Fillmore Street when he was shot in the chest. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, Gaines said.
About 9 p.m. on Aug. 27, a 25-year-old man was killed after initially being critically wounded in a shooting in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The man, Wesley Kelly, of the 6200 block of South Evans, was pronounced dead on Aug. 28 at 6 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Kelly was a passenger in the back seat of a car headed west in the 6700 block of South Michigan Avenue when somene walked up with a gun and began firing, police said. Police earlier had a different address for the shooting.
Kelly was hit in the head and driven to Saint Bernard Hospital, police said. He was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy conducted on Sept. 1 ruled his death a homicide due to a gunshot wound to his head.
Other shootings:
--Around 12:15 a.m. Friday, a 50-year-old man was wounded in the Pilsen neighborhood, Gaines said. He was walking through an alley in the 1600 block of South Blue Island Avenue when a dark-colored car pulled up and someone inside shot him, Gaines said.
The man was hit in the wrist and managed to get to the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, where his condition was stabilized, Gaines said.
--Around 10:05 p.m. Thursday, a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were wounded in the North Austin neighborhood on the West Side, said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago police spokeswoman.
The men were standing outside in the 1500 block of North Linder Avenue when someone in a group of people on the corner across the street fired a gun, Greer said.
The 19-year-old was grazed in the back and taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park in good condition. The 20-year-old was hit in the left arm and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where his condition was stabilized, Greer said.
--About 3:45 p.m., a 48-year-old man was shot in the abdomen in the 3400 block of West Lexington Street in the Homan Square neighborhood, according to police. He was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago police spokeswoman.
Police did not release any details of the shooting.
--Earlier, in the West Englewood neighborhood, two men were shot about 1:30 p.m. on the 6400 block of South Honore Street. Preliminary information indicated that two men, 24 and 21, were wounded. The first victim was shot in the foot and thigh and was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. The second man was shot in the hip and was treated and released at Mount Sinai, police said.
--A 31-year-old man was wounded around 7:30 a.m. on the 3000 block of West Washington Boulevard in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman. According to police, the man said he was walking on the street when someone hollered out to him. The man began to flee, but he was shot in the legs, Estrada said.
He was taken to Stroger ospital in good condition.
Police said the man was a documented gang member and was being uncooperative.
No one was in custody in any of the shootings Friday morning.
