1 dead, 8 wounded in shootings across Chicago

Feb. 03--A man was killed and at least eight people were wounded Tuesday through Wednesday morning in shootings across Chicago, police said.

The fatal shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. in the South Chicago neighborhood, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

A 21-year-old man was on the sidewalk in the 8100 block of South Houston Avenue when a gray minivan stopped nearby and someone inside fired shots, Alfaro said. He was shot in the buttocks and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Other shootings:

--About 2:50 a.m. Wednesday a 20-year-old man was shot in the South Shore neighborhood, police said. He was looking for a parking space in the 6700 block of South Merrill Avenue when someone got out of a car and began firing, police said. He was hit in the head and went to Jackson Park Hospital, then was transferred to Stroger Hospital. He was listed in serious condition.

--At 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 20-year-old man was shot in West Garfield Park, police said. He told investigators he was in an alley in the 4700 block of West Jackson Boulevard when someone walked up, announced a robbery, stole his wallet and shot him in the leg.

He went to Loyola University Medical Center and was listed in good condition. A law enforcement source said the wound may be self-inflicted.

--At 9:30 p.m., a 32-year-old man was shot in West Garfield Park. He was in a parked car in the 4400 block of West Monroe Street when he was shot in the face, police said. He went to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

--At 8:30 p.m., a 77-year-old man was shot in the knee as he drove in the 7100 block of South Morgan Street in the Englewood neighborhood, police said. He was hospitalized at St. Bernard Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

--A 27-year-old man was wounded in the Albany Park neighborhood. The man walked into Swedish Covenant Medical Center and said he had been shot around 4 p.m. in the 4900 block of North Harding Avenue, police said. He was listed in serious condition.

--About the same time, a 17-year-old boy walked into Presence Community Medical Center and told police he had been shot in the 3600 block of West Irving Park Road, near Central Park Avenue. Police did not locate a crime scene, and police were trying to determine if he was actually shot on Harding.

--Another man, 20, was shot in the Marquette Park neighborhood during a robbery about 3:40 p.m. He suffered a wound in the right armpit in the 7000 block of South Rockwell Avenue, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in stable condition.

--A 26-year-old man was shot in the South Shore neighborhood about 3:10 p.m. He was shot in the shoulder by someone who opened fire from a passing light-colored van in the 7800 block of South Colfax Avenue, according to police. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition.

Nearly 300 people have been shot in Chicago so far this year, at least 57 of them fatally, according to data compiled by the Tribune.
