4 winners, 2 losers from Friday’s workouts at the NFL scouting combine

Day 2 of the NFL scouting combine is done, leaving us to figure out what it all means. The running backs and offensive linemen ran their individual drills and are finished for the weekend. But with both being needs for the Baltimore Ravens, which players and prospects helped or hurt themselves on Friday.

Winners:

Josh Jacobs / RB / Alabama:

Not running at the combine due to a groin injury looks like the smartest move of the day. While nearly the rest of the running back class looked slow and unremarkable, Jacobs gets to hold on to his top billing and will likely run on home turf. I’d fully expect Baltimore to be camped out at his Pro Day to see if he’s worthy of a first-round status.

Miles Sanders / RB / Penn State:

Sanders was one of the few running backs that actually looked good Friday. He ran a 4.49 40-yard dash, made silky smooth cuts in drills and caught the ball well. On a day where so very few of his fellow prospects didn’t disappoint, Sanders stood out and potentially upped his draft stock with the Ravens.

Elgton Jenkins / C / Mississippi State:

We pointed Jenkins out as a prospect to watch at the combine and if you did, you got a pretty good show. He put up the seventh-most reps at the bench press and 14th-best broad jump, showing plenty of power. He posted pretty solid numbers at all the drills in fact, including in the 3-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle — two spots he was expected to falter.

The Ravens need someone like that at center and Jenkins might have seriously put himself on Baltimore’s board.

Andre Dillard / T / Washington State:

Dillard cemented his place in the first round with an outstanding combine performance. He posted the fourth-best 40-yard dash time, the best broad jump, second-best 3-cone drill, and best 20-yard shuttle. If the Ravens are looking for a new offensive tackle to potentially replace Ronnie Stanley in 2020, Dillard might be the guy for them at No. 22.

Losers:

Alex Collins / RB:

Collins’ disappointing slide continued with a car crash and arrest early Friday morning before being waived later that afternoon. His status with the Ravens was already in question after his lackluster 2018 season but the arrest sealed the deal for a player who had been surprising and impressive just a season before.

Elijah Holyfield / RB / Georgia:

While Sanders had an outstanding combine both during the drills and workout portions, Holyfield was the polar opposite. He ran the second-slowest 40 time among running backs and dropped the ball during pass-catching drills. Teams should be confused on how they’ll actually use Holyfield because he doesn’t do any one thing particularly well at this point.
