4 UDFAs with a chance to make Colts’ roster

The Indianapolis Colts have somewhat of a tradition going in the fact that they have had an undrafted free agent make the initial roster every season for the last 20 years.

Whether that streak will continue in 2019 remains to be seen. The roster depth is much stronger than it has been in years, which could make it difficult for simply one undrafted free agent to crack the initial 53-man roster.

Still, here are four undrafted free agents that have a chance to make the Colts’ roster:

WR Penny Hart

A prospect that many believed could have gone during Dy 3 of the 2019 NFL Draft, Hart is one of the more popular undrafted free agents the Colts signed. Despite his small frame, he has the skills that could see him compete for one of the final spots on the roster.

The wide receiver room is expected to be crowded with competition, especially for the final spots in the room. How many wide receivers the Colts keep remains to be seen, but Hart has a chance to make the roster if he proves his route running, speed and ball skills make up for his lack of size.

WR Ashton Dulin

Another wide receiver to keep an eye on this offseason, Dulin might have a better chance than Hart to make the roster given his size and athleticism. Though he might be a bit raw, Dulin’s athletic traits could be enough to warrant a spot on the roster if he proves he can develop quickly.

There will be massive competition for the final spots. Dulin will have to compete against players that already have one or two years of experience in the league, which certainly gives them an advantage. Still, Dulin’s athletic traits can be enough to warrant a spot as the final wide receiver in the room.

He will have to have an incredible offseason working in the competition, but there is a chance Dulin can make it.

TE Hale Hentges

The Alabama product didn’t nearly get as much hype as his counterpart in Irv Smith, Jr., but the Colts might have an interest in his skill set enough to keep him on the roster. He will have to compete with the final spot in the room, but it’s a possibility.

Hentges comes out of college as one of the best blocking tight ends in the class. He didn’t do much as a pass catcher during his career with the Crimson Tide, but he was a leader and a sound blocker. There’s a chance the Colts hope to develop his pass catching to the point where he can be used in a variety of situations.

Hentges will have to compete with the likes of Ross Travis for the final tight end spot if they wind up keeping four on the roster.

DT Jordan Thompson

The Northwestern product enters a defensive tackle room that looks almost the same as it did in 2018. Outside of the trade that sent Hassan Ridgeway to the Philadelphia Eagles during the draft, the Colts didn’t make many changes to the interior defensive line.

Despite his size (6’2, 284), Thompson does have some intriguing traits even though it isn’t clear where he is best lined up. He’s likely too light to work the nose tackle position, which means the Colts could be working him at the three-technique behind Denico Autry and Tyquan Lewis.

There aren’t a whole lot of positions on the defensive side of the ball that will be up for grabs by undrafted free agents, but Thompson could be in competition for the final spot in the defensive line.
