4 things to know about new Jets WR Deonte Thompson

Adam Gase has kept himself busy as the Jets’ interim GM.

On Tuesday, Gase signed one of his former wideouts in veteran WR Deonte Thompson, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, to help bolster the Jets’ wide receiver room. Thompson brings a winning pedigree with an outside shot at making the Jets roster.

With that being said, let’s get to know the new receiver.

Deonte Thompson accepted a scholarship to play for Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators. After redshirting his freshman season, Thompson played every single game in 2008, helping lead the University of Florida to a 2008 BCS National Championship.

Thompson signed as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens following the 2012 NFL draft. He made the team and caught five passes in the regular season and handled kick return duties for the first five games. Thompson received a ring after the Ravens defeated the 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII.

As a veteran receiver in the NFL for the past seven seasons, Deonte Thompson has not made one place home for too long.

Thompson has been on five teams, including Gang Green, but has had three different stints with the Buffalo Bills. He has made other stops in Baltimore, Chicago and Dallas as well.

As a high school senior in 2006, Thompson helped lead his team to a Class 3A state football championship.

Thompson also ran in the 100-meter and 200-meter events for the Glades Central high school track and field team. He earned first place in the 100-meter and 200-meter events at the Florida high school state championships.

Adam Gase Connection

Deonte Thompson is the latest Jets addition that has an Adam Gase connection.

Thompson joins Josh Bellamy as receivers who played under Gase when he was the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator back in 2015.

Thompson was a practice squad addition that had two catches for 81 yards in 14 games. He didn’t fully come into his own until Gase left for Miami, but having familiarity with the offense will surely help him.
