4 things to know about new Jets RB coach Jim Bob Cooter

The Jets officially announced Adam Gase’s staff on Friday afternoon.

There were some familiar names, some returning faces, and a few names that jump off the page. Jim Bob Cooter certainly fits the latter category.

Cooter was hired to be the Jets running backs coach, a capacity he has never held. Cooter was formerly the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator from 2015-18. He also served under Gase in Denver as an assistant.

Let’s get to know the Jets new running back coach.

His real name is not Jim Bob Cooter

Jim Bob Cooter’s legal name is not actually Jim Bob Cooter.

His legal name is Jim Robert Cooter, but he decided to shorten that to Jim Bob. Now, he has one of the best names in the NFL.

Cooter was an offensive assistant under Adam Gase in Denver, when Gase served as the offensive coordinator for Peyton Manning’s historic season.

Cooter has never been a running backs coach before, but he has at least worked under Gase in some capacity.

Cooter played quarterback for the University of Tennesee.

He would never be confused with Peyton Manning, but he was a backup for the Volunteers. He would stay on as a graduate assistant in Tennessee following his playing career.

Has been arrested twice

Unforuntaley, the Jets newest running back coach has been in trouble with the law on multiple occasions.

Cooter has been arrested twice. In 2006, he was suspended indefinitely from his post as a graduate assistant at Tennessee after being arrested and charged with DUI.

In 2009, Cooter was charged with an aggravated burglary charge after he climbed through a woman’s window and got into her bed. Those charges were eventually dropped.
