4 teens charged in St. Francis de Sales sex assault investigation

May 17--Four teenagers have been charged with attempted criminal sexual assault stemming from an incident involving the baseball team at St. Francis de Sales High School in Chicago, officials said.

St. Francis de Sales officials announced in April that they were suspending 12 students over a March incident in a school locker room, which they characterized as "bullying." Five students were suspended five days for allegedly participating and seven others for two days for witnessing it and not reporting it, according to the school at the time.

Police said at the time that they were investigating the incident as a sexual assault.

Four juveniles were held at the Calumet District police station Saturday and have since been released to their parents.

The four were each charged as juveniles with one count of attempted criminal sexual assault, police said. The four were ordered to appear for a hearing June 8 in Cook County Juvenile Court, police said.

The alleged victim is a senior and was on the school's baseball team. A group of fellow students allegedly attacked him with a bat in a locker room at the school March 23, a law enforcement source said.

School officials did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
