The Philadelphia Eagles improved the depth on their roster on Tuesday, re-signing Jason Peters to a one-year deal and moving the future Hall of Famer to right guard in place of Brandon Brooks.
With Peters back on a one-year, $6 million deal, here are four takeaways from the move:
***
1. Matt Pryor is not the guy
The signing of Peters is not an indictment on Pryor, but it speaks to the level of comfort that the Eagles have with the Hall of Fame left tackle.
2. Andre Dillard can sleep well now
Peters will be on the roster, but Dillard has the chance to establish himself as the alpha-dawg at left tackle. Dillard gets the comfort of not looking over his shoulders at left tackle, but still having Peters as a mentor and role model on the roster.
Look for Dillard to be even more confident at the start of training camp.
3. Can Peters hold up at right guard?
Peters is a former collegiate tight end and one of the most athletic left tackles in NFL history, but this move won’t be about nimble feet or being able to punch Khalil Mack. Peters will move inside to guard and it’ll be interesting to see if his body can hold up inside the interior trenches of the NFL line.
4. Eagles have supreme depth on the offensive line
With Peters returning, Pryor becomes the hybrid offensive linemen along with rookie Jack Driscoll. After Pryor, Driscoll, and Prince Tega Wanogho, it’ll be interesting to see who the other two linemen (Sua Opeta) on the Eagles roster are because they’ll only likely carry 10.
