The Philadelphia and 26-year-old quarterback Carson Wentz have agreed to a four-year contract extension that will run through the 2024 season, the team announced Thursday.
The deal is worth $128 million, with at least $107 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter.
The Eagles originally selected Wentz out of North Dakota St. with the second pick in the 2016 NFL Draft after the Rams selected Jared Goff. Since then, Wentz has completed 63.7% of his passes and thrown for 70 touchdowns in 40 career games.
Here are four takeaways from the massive new deal:
The Eagles still have two years remaining on Wentz’s rookie deal
Wentz huge guarantees won’t kick in yet, as the Eagles star is already under contract for the next two seasons as part of the rookie deal he signed after being selected No. 2 overall. Per Over The Cap, Wentz will earn $8.5 million in 2019 and $22.7 million in 2020 as part of a fifth-year option the Eagles exercised earlier this offseason.
Patrick Mahomes is next
Howie Roseman is good at his job because he knows when to make a move and when to stand pat. New deals have been discussed for the Rams’ Jared Goff and Cowboys’ Dak Prescott. Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes could become the NFL’s first $200 million man, so the Eagles struck early before Wentz adds an MVP to the mix.
Wentz has yet to play his best ball
Last season Carson Wentz had a quarterback rating of (102.2), a completion percentage of (69.6%) and passed for 3000 yards, all while coming back early from a torn ACL and playing multiple games with a broken bone in his back.
With a full offseason and security blankets all over the field, watch out.
The Eagles believe in their quarterback
The contract extension, the biggest in NFL history from a guaranteed standpoint, signals that the Eagles believe they have the best passer in the NFL and Doug Pederson and company put their money where their mouths are. The $32 million per season puts him fourth among quarterbacks behind Russell Wilson ($35 million), Ben Roethlisberger ($34 million) and Aaron Rodgers ($33.5 million). That’s huge money and signals the Eagles believe that Wentz is an elite signal caller.
