4 takeaways from Adam Gase’s post-trade deadline comments

It’s been a rollercoaster ride so far for Adam Gase in his first season as Jets head coach. Between his quarterback having mononucleosis, the offensive line being awful and now the trade deadline, there’s been a lot of chaos.

Gase went on The Michael Kay Show after the trade deadline passed Tuesday and discussed some of the names that were floating around in potential trade scenarios. He also talked about how you handle guys who were on the trade block that didn’t get traded, among other things.

Let’s take a closer look at some of those things that Gase said after the deadline.

Damage Control

When a team puts a player on the block and that player doesn’t get traded, it could get a little awkward.

Robby Anderson was one of the big names that was rumored to be available but ultimately stayed put. While Anderson knows he’ll be with the Jets for the rest of the season, Gase has to control the damage that was done by the rumors.

“A lot of guys are different,” Gase said. “Robby was obviously the one that was getting floated out there. I had a couple conversations with Robby.”

The hope is that Gase and Anderson talked it out and are on the same page for the remainder of the season.

Jamal Adams Talks

While multiple reports confirmed that the Jets had talks with teams about trading Jamal Adams, word never reached Gase.

“No one came knocking on my door to give me a heads up,” Gase said. “I don’t know how real that was.”

It was real to the point where the Cowboys had offered the Jets a first-round pick and a second day draft pick, but that’s not what the Jets were looking for. They were looking for a first-round pick and two second-round picks, essentially making Adams untouchable.

Since Joe Douglas has become general manager, he’s had full control of the roster. Douglas and Gase collaborate on certain things, but it appears Gase was not in on this situation.

Le’Veon Bell Rumors

Just like Jamal Adams, Gase claimed to be out of the loop with the Le’Veon Bell trade rumors.

“That’s news to me,” he said.

The Jets weren’t actively shopping Bell, but if a team called them about him, they listened. The only two teams that had major interest in Bell were the Texans and Chiefs.

However, the asking price was too steep for those teams and nothing materialized. It would’ve been interesting to see how Gase would’ve reacted if Bell was traded, given the rumors that Gase didn’t want to sign Bell in the offseason.

Offensive Line Issues

The Jets offensive line has been one of the biggest problems with this team and Gase is not sure what more he can do.

“The more guys we have protecting… the worse our protection is,” he said.

When the head coach says that more protection leads to more pressure on the quarterback, you know you have an issue. The Jets are dead last in the NFL in sacks per game, allowing 4.9 a game. Meanwhile, they’ve allowed 34 total sacks in seven games after giving up 37 all of last season.

Gase can only do so much with this unit and it’s clear that they don’t have a lot of talent.
