4 Stores With January Sales Middle-Class Retirees Should Take Advantage of To Cut Costs All Year

Stores in January are often more focused on clearing out what didn’t sell over the holidays, which means the chance for significant bargains. For middle-class retirees looking to take advantage, the right January purchase can lower expenses well beyond winter.

This year, those discounts may feel even more welcome, with tariffs having pushed up prices on everything from household goods to electronics. January sales offer a chance to offset some of those increases before paying full price becomes the norm again.

While dates are rarely locked in and tend to shift from year to year, most sales reliably show up in early January and tend to favor people who shop with a plan rather than jumping on last-minute deals. Here are four stores that are currently offering sales this month to help you save money all year.

Macy’s

Macy’s January sales feature items like clothing, bedding, home goods and appliances, which often come with discounts ranging from roughly 20% to 75%. Replacing winter staples and household basics is a great strategy for saving money throughout the year and focusing on durability is a smart strategy. A quality comforter or set of sheets bought once can avoid multiple replacements later for retirees, for example.

Small appliances also stand out, with a Ninja two basket air fryer already marked down from $199.95 to $119.99, a saving of about 40%. Appliances like this can reduce reliance on takeout and cut energy use compared with full ovens, both ways to save money all year.

Walmart

Walmart is another retailer known for discounts right after the holidays, when many shoppers are more focused on returns than purchases. This year’s New Year’s Day sale had prices marked down as much as 89% on major brands like Apple, Dyson and Cuisinart, according to People.

Higher ticket items can be worth the splurge when it’s discounted and used often by retirees. For example, a Dyson Airwrap, originally $699 and currently priced at $529.99, could save money by replacing frequent and pricey salon visits.

Ulta Beauty

Ulta traditionally runs January promotions like Jumbo Love, discounts on “jumbo” sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner bottles, featuring premium brands including Olaplex and Paul Mitchell.

Jumbo bottles generally work out cheaper per unit anyway, for example, a 16-ounce bottle of OUAI shampoo at $44 works out at $2.75 per ounce. compared to a 3-ounce bottle at $16 or over $5 per ounce. Add sale discounts and shoppers will save even more.

Kohl’s

Kohl’s usually extends holiday clearance into January across apparel, home goods and seasonal items. Winter clothing and basic housewares are often marked down well after gift buying ends and clearance pricing in January helps keeps spending steady throughout the year. Kohl’s has already launched a January clearance section for jewelry, showing how early its markdowns can begin.

Bonus: Post-Holiday Clearance Across Retailers

January sales are a chance to pick up bargains across different stores and departments, from major brands to smaller independents. Many retailers dramatically slash prices on seasonal inventory, so things like holiday décor, wrapping supplies, artificial trees and storage bins are often marked down by 50% or more. Buying these items now sets retired shoppers up for a cheaper holiday season next year.

Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
